Former Honorary Consul of Nepal Visits AIC in Support of Nepali Community

At a difficult time, as communities across Nepal continue to face the aftermath of the devastating flash floods, AIC recently welcomed Mr Dinesh Khadka MNZM, JP, former Honorary Consul of Nepal, for a special gathering with our Nepali student community. 

A large number of Nepali students joined the gathering, creating an opportunity to come together, share concerns and hear about the support available to the Nepali community in New Zealand. 

Mr Khadka spoke with students about the situation in Nepal and the importance of community support during times of crisis. He reassured students that support is available here in New Zealand and encouraged anyone who may need assistance or guidance to reach out. 

The conversation also turned towards how those living abroad can contribute to Nepal’s relief and recovery efforts. Students heard about different ways to support those affected, including contributions to the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund and the option to text “NEPAL” to 849 to donate $3. 

For students living far from their families and homeland, however, the gathering was about more than fundraising. It provided a space to connect with others experiencing the same concerns and to be reminded that they are part of a community ready to support one another. 

The gathering concluded on a particularly heartfelt note. Students and staff came together in a group hug before collectively calling out “Kia kaha, Nepal!”; a powerful expression of solidarity, strength and hope for the people of Nepal as recovery and rebuilding continue.
