A career in Early Childhood Education is the perfect fit for mother and former pediatric ward nurse Jie (Jessie) Zhou.

“My mother used to be an early childhood teacher, and I remember her often telling me a child's smile is the most beautiful thing in the world,” she says.

“Influenced by my mother, my background in pediatric work, and my experience raising children, I felt a desire to work with children.”

Jessie came to New Zealand from China about 18 years ago. Prior to that, she worked as a nurse in the pediatric ward of a hospital for seven years.

She took some time off to raise her three children, but now that two are in high school and the youngest in intermediate school, she thought it was time to begin a new and meaningful career.

Jessie was a little worried about returning to study because of her age and English language requirements.

“Thankfully, my family and friends have given me lots of support and encouragement, giving me the courage to try,” she says.

Jessie enrolled in the NZ Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 5) at our new Takapuna Campus.

“When I first came to the Takapuna Campus, the modern building, tidy classrooms, and welcoming teachers left a very deep impression on me,” she says.

The programme has been challenging but she’s persisted with the support of her teachers and classmates.

“The teachers here are very good, they gave us great support and help,” she says.

She is particularly grateful to Lecturer Holly He, who is patient and guides everyone through their work individually.

“I am really touched by her efforts and dedication,” says Jessie.

Jessie is a third of the way through her studies, with two placements coming up. She’s looking forward to the challenge of applying all of the knowledge she’s gained so far.

After she graduates, she will either seek work as an Early Childhood educator or continue her studies at Level 7.

Jessie recommends Ashton Warner to those thinking about studying Early Childhood Education. She says the programme is not just for aspiring Early Childhood educators. It’s also ideal for parents of young children.
