Campus hosts vibrant Nepali New Year celebration
Auckland International Campus marked the Nepali New Year with a vibrant celebration organised by the Nepalese Student Community.
At today’s event, we learned about Nepalese culture and the history behind the New Year.
Nepalese follow a lunisolar calendar, and the New Year, also known as Naya Barsha, usually falls in mid-April. Our campus event was held early, ahead of the study block break.
The Nepali calendar is 56 to 57 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar. That means we are celebrating the arrival of the year 2083 BS (Bikram Sambat).
The event included the singing of the national anthem, along with cultural music, and traditional song and dance performances.
Games brought students together before everyone shared a range of Nepalese food. Many attendees wore traditional attire.
Today’s event offered a chance to learn about Nepalese traditions, meet new people, and celebrate diversity within the campus community.
It also gave our large and active Nepali student group an opportunity to share their culture with others.
