Course Overview

This nationally recognised qualification is designed for people who want to build the skills to lead people and manage processes confidently and effectively. Over the programme you will learn how to lead others to achieve objectives, manage workflows, respond to situations that call for leadership, and communicate in ways that build strong working relationships. You will also develop the ability to foster inclusive, diverse teams and to role-model professional and ethical practice. Grounded in Aotearoa New Zealand’s bicultural foundation and reflective of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the programme prepares you to lead in a wide range of workplace, cultural and community settings. It is delivered fully online, with a live weekly evening workshop supported by directed online learning activities, so you can study while you work.

Programme Information

The programme is made up of four courses:

  • Leading People and Managing Workflows (20 credits)
  • Communication Skills (15 credits)
  • Leadership in Action (15 credits)
  • Professional Practice (10 credits)

 

Indicative content across the programme includes:

  • Setting objectives and contributing to the planning of a workflow, including prioritisation, scheduling, resource allocation and use of digital tools.
  • Leading and collaborating with teams through delegation, motivation, gaining buy-in, conflict resolution, managing resistance and leading through change.
  • Leadership styles, situational awareness, and adjusting your approach to meet the objective of an activity.
  • Monitoring progress and using feedback loops, reflection and self-review to assess your own leadership approach.
  • Communication tools and techniques such as verbal and non-verbal communication, active listening, giving and receiving feedback, and handling difficult conversations.
  • Selecting communication channels, timing and approaches to suit the team, situation and audience.
  • Fostering an inclusive environment that supports diversity, equity and belonging, recognising and responding to diverse needs, and understanding unconscious bias.
  • Assessing situations that require leadership action and gathering information to inform decisions.
  • Responding to situations, documenting and recording actions, and assessing their impact.
  • Promoting professional and ethical practice, including codes of conduct, organisational values, tikanga, integrity, confidentiality and objectivity.
  • Applying Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Ao Māori perspectives within leadership practice.
  • Self-reflection and self-assessment models, gathering feedback from others, and developing a personal action plan with SMART goals.

This programme leads to the New Zealand Certificate in Leadership (Level 4) [Ref: 5306], a nationally recognised qualification. It builds on the New Zealand Certificate in Leadership (Level 3) [Ref: 5304] or other Level 3 qualifications on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework. On completion, it can support progression to higher-level leadership and management qualifications such as the New Zealand Diploma in Business [Ref: 2459] or the New Zealand Diploma in Strategic Leadership (Level 6) [Ref: 5355], or other qualifications with leadership and management components.

Entry to this programme is open to applicants who have completed one of the following:

  • The New Zealand Certificate in Leadership (Level 3) or
  • Another Level 3 qualification on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework; or
  • A secondary school qualification from the applicant’s country of origin.

Special Admission and Discretionary Admission are available for applicants aged 20 and over who do not meet the general admission requirements. Contact our enrolments team to discuss your situation.

 

International applicants will also need to meet:

  • The internationally recognised english proficiency outcomes for studying a Level 4 qualification, as prescribed in the latest NZQA programme approval, recognition, and accreditation Rules; and
  • Immigration New Zealand requirements with respect to study hours, duration and mode of study.

You will have access to classes each week where you can ask your lecturers questions about your assessments and learning.
